Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway Route Map Explained

The proposed Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway route map outlines a massive greenfield infrastructure project designed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Spanning 519 km across three northern states, this 4-lane access-controlled highway will establish a direct, high-speed logistical gateway connecting northeastern India with the northern industrial centers. The corridor traverses key agricultural and trade hubs across Uttar Pradesh, North Bihar, and West Bengal, transforming regional transit efficiency.

The expressway begins at Jagdishpur in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Gorakhpur acts as a strategic logistics hub in eastern UP, offering direct connectivity to the Purvanchal Expressway and the Gorakhpur Link Expressway. From its western terminus, the alignment heads east, quickly crossing the state boundary into Bihar.

The Bihar segment is the longest portion of the route map, stretching approximately 416 km and passing through ten districts of North Bihar. The route proceeds through Gopalganj and Siwan, providing these rural and border districts with immediate high-speed access to market centers. It then passes through Saran and moves towards the industrial city of Muzaffarpur, which serves as a major commercial center in North Bihar. The integration of this route allows Muzaffarpur and Saran to bypass local highway congestion.

Continuing eastwards, the expressway traverses Darbhanga and Madhubani. Darbhanga serves as a cultural and economic hub, and the highway passes near the local airport corridor. From Madhubani, the expressway route map cuts across the Koshi river plains, linking the districts of Supaul and Saharsa. The engineering design includes high-capacity bridges and elevated structures over the flood-prone Koshi basin to ensure all-weather operational capability.

The alignment then passes through Purnia, a major commercial and logistics cluster in eastern Bihar, and moves through the border district of Kishanganj. Purnia serves as a vital confluence point, connecting the expressway to the wider regional road network. From Kishanganj, the expressway crosses into West Bengal, terminating at the strategic logistics bottleneck of Siliguri. Siliguri represents the gateway to the northeastern states, making the terminal junction critical for trilateral trade routes with Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.

In terms of integration, the route map has been designed to align with several active development corridors. Interchanges will connect the expressway to existing national highways like NH-27 (the East-West Corridor), NH-19, and NH-31. The project also lays the groundwork for seamless links to future infrastructure like the Varanasi–Kolkata Expressway. In Bihar, it will intersect with major state routes, providing quick transit corridors for agricultural output from districts like Madhubani and Gopalganj.

Engineering-wise, the alignment faces significant challenges. The route map details cross-drainage structures, underpasses for agricultural vehicles, and massive bridges over rivers like the Gandak, Koshi, and Mahananda. Due to the high water table and frequent floods in North Bihar, the embankment height will be elevated by 2 to 3 meters in specific sections to prevent waterlogging and damage.

Additionally, this greenfield route map provides a much shorter path compared to the traditional National Highway routes. Traveling from Gorakhpur to Siliguri currently takes upwards of 15 hours on double-lane and semi-congested highways. Once fully operational, the new route will slash transit time to just 6 to 7 hours, offering massive fuel savings for commercial cargo. This will also facilitate faster trade with neighboring countries like Nepal, using cross-border checkpoints near Kishanganj and Siliguri. Once completed, this expressway will act as a major counterpart to southern road systems like the Pune Ring Road and the Mumbai Coastal Road network, consolidating NHAI's national network.

Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway Latest Update

The Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway project is progressing through the land acquisition stage. MoRTH and NHAI are finalizing clearances and land payouts across 10 key districts in Bihar, which hosts the longest section of the alignment.

Pre-construction joint-measurement surveys and environmental clearances are being processed. Tendering packages are expected to release in phases once 80% land acquisition milestones are achieved.

Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway Completion Date

The official targeted completion date for the Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway is set for late 2028 or early 2029. Achieving this timeline depends on the following key milestones:

  • Tendering Phase (2026): Construction packages are being bid out by NHAI. Contractors are expected to be mobilized by late 2026.
  • Construction Window (2026–2028): A 30-month construction window is specified in the bidding documents. Work will occur simultaneously across multiple packages.
  • Expected Commissioning: The first sections of the greenfield alignment are projected to be open by mid-2028, with the full corridor commissioned by early 2029.

Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway Land Acquisition Status

As of June 2026, land acquisition for the Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway is in an advanced stage. Because the project spans three states, NHAI has set up dedicated land acquisition units (LAUs) in coordination with state revenue departments:

  • Uttar Pradesh Segment: Land acquisition in Gorakhpur district is virtually complete, with compensation payouts distributed to landholders in the Jagdishpur starting node.
  • Bihar Segment: Acquisition is active across 10 districts. Over 75% of the required land has been acquired or notification of acquisition (3D notifications under the National Highways Act) has been issued. Challenges remain in localized floodplains where land records are being updated.
  • West Bengal Segment: Joint surveys are underway in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts near Siliguri to finalize boundary payouts.

NHAI plans to complete 80% of total land acquisition milestones before awarding construction packages to successful bidders, ensuring zero delays once contractors mobilize.
